Tomato plants and unripe tomatoes – poisonous for dogs.

Onions and onion powder – can cause anaemia and harm your dog’s kidneys.
Chives and garlic – whether powdered, raw or cooked.
Mushrooms – certain types of mushrooms can induce organ failure, seizures and comas in dogs.
Raw potatoes – can cause problems in your dog’s kidneys, digestive tract and nervous system.

What Happens if Your Dog Eats Fruits or Vegetables which Are Toxic?

If your dog eats one of the fruit or vegetables on this list, they could suffer damage to their kidneys, organ failure, problems with their digestive tract and nervous system, or experience seizures and comas. Depending on what they have eaten and how much, they could experience the following symptoms: vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, your dog may stumble or become weak, breathlessness, wheezing or difficulty breathing, tremors, drooling, tiredness, bloody urine or changes to their heartbeat.

What You Should Do if Your Dog Eats Fruits or Vegetables which Are Toxic?

Take your dog to the vet or pet emergency clinic immediately. Your vet might prescribe oxygen therapy, blood transfusions or induced vomiting.

Which Fruits and Vegetables are Safe for Dogs?

The following fruits and vegetables are generally safe for your dog. However, be wary of fruits with high sugar content as sugar is not good for your dog or their teeth. Also, be mindful that too much fruit can upset your dog’s stomach:

Carrots are great for dogs as they are low in calories and good for their teeth. Watermelon is good too as it has a high water content so it helps to keep your dog hydrated when the weather is hot. Remember to remove the rind and seeds.
